Assignment 9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
- Who: Through my interviews, I found out that there are groups of people that fall outside of my market. These individuals are people who seem to claim they have no mental illness and those who don’t think it is a concern. I interviewed several students at the University of Florida and one graduate. Two interviewees are from high school that claimed that they look at the services provided on campus when deciding where to go to college.
- I also found out that there is a market where I thought there wouldn’t be. This market is for younger students perusing college. I interviewed two high school students, in their senior year, and they both said that they were going to take into account the mental health care when picking their schools, and that if a university were to have a combined mental and physical health program that it would be great.
- Interviewee number two said that the Counseling and Wellness Center made her wait until February for an appointment then postponed it for another two weeks so she never sought out help again and that if mental health was just incorporated into her regular check-ups it would be convenient.
- Another interviewee, who is a part of generation X, claimed essentially not to believe mental health is a thing. Stating that she just didn’t get it, she has great mental health Saying younger generations are always making something out of nothing.
- My last interviewee had multiple negative experiences with UF Health, U Matter We Care, and the Counseling and Wellness Center. He claimed that each was bad in their own way, but throughout all of them he felt as though he was never heard by any of the doctors, or counselors.
- What: One interviewee brought up a good point: this would definitely help the problem, but it is also removing the stigma behind mental illness because it would be viewed as the same as a physical illness.
- Why: I believe that the need is not different – it is just a matter of if they want it to be resolved (high school students and older adults not caring) or if they feel that their current methods are satisfying the need (college health care standards).

Caroline,
ReplyDeleteGreat job identifying those groups of people that are outside of your market. You're right in that there are definitely people out there that don't believe mental health is a legitimate issue worth the time and effort needed to improve treatment. However, I think your solution can help overcome the stigma associated with mental health.
