27A-Reading Reflection No. 3

Book: Twenty-Seven Dollars and A Dream: How Muhammad Yunus Changed the World and What It Cost Him

By: Katharine Esty

1) You read about an entrepreneur: Muhammad Yunus
·      What surprised you the most?
o   How much Yunus accomplished in his life and the fact that it goes back even further than most would expect, to when he was even a student. Also, that he found an innovative way to tie financial and socioeconomic issues together to aid the impoverished through creating micro-loans.
·      What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
o   He stuck to his passion for social change and was completely dedicated to making them happen. His Nobel Peace Prize is pretty cool too.
·      What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
o   Oddly enough he’s a very admirable man, with few reasons to dislike/discredit his work.
·      Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?
o   Of course, most success grows from adversity, like that of a lotus flower growing through mud, even though his mother was diagnosed as mentally ill, he stuck to what he valued academics, civil and social concepts, as well as revolutionized the banking system.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
He was able to assess a few issues and competently find a solution for seemingly opposing topics
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
Honestly, none of it. It was very inspiring.
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
You’ve done a wonderful job revolutionizing a way to break through seemingly static positions in the socioeconomic pyramid. What made you want to start with helping women? How did you think to create something at the time that seemed so abstract and put it into action?
5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
Definitely, hard work pays off in any situation and I do believe Yunus would agree with that.

  1. Hello Caroline!
I think this biography is a well deserved one. Muhammad Yunus found a way to really help people and make money doing it. I think people like him are really inspirational and pave the way for other entrepreneurs to really think outside the greedy box and to do something of value to help others. I haven't heard of Muhammad Yunus before this, but I think I might have to pick this book up to learn more. Thank you!

  3. Hi Caroline,
This was a really unique choice for you to read about and I've actually never heard of Muhammad Yunus. I like your iteration of his metaphor with the lotus flower that grows out of mud. It shows that with enough perseverance, success can actually stem from failure and hardship. I think you will use this story as motivation and inspiration to follow your passion, whether that be your business model for this class or the medical field that I know you would like to have a career in!

  4. Hey, totally never heard of this guy before your blog, its always so great to hear and learn more about amazing people that have done things that helped shape the world. I guess I gotta thank this class for exposing us to all these people we may have never known without. Crazy he did so much when he was just a student.
