20A – Growing Your Social Capital

1) Who they are and what their background is. They are an up and coming app developer.

2) Which 'slot' you are filling with each person (i.e., domain expert, market expert, supplier), and how the person fills the spot. App creation domain expert, they are necessary to get my business off the ground and mimic that of Uber.

3) A description of how you found the person and contacted the person. Was fortunate enough to take Creativity in Action with someone who created an app for their Catalyst project.

4) The nature of the exchange you have with the person -- what favor did they do for you? What is the return expectation? Pleasant and informative.

5) How will including this person in your network enhance your ability to exploit an opportunity? I would exploit their natural technological savviness to get my company going.

1) Who they are and what their background is. Recently graduated student at UF.

2) Which 'slot' you are filling with each person (i.e., domain expert, market expert, supplier), and how the person fills the spot. They are a market expert because he got his degree in marketing and knows the first hand struggles of commuting on campus without a scooter.

3) A description of how you found the person and contacted the person. Wonderful, glad I got to catch up with them.

4) The nature of the exchange you have with the person -- what favor did they do for you? What is the return expectation? They really loved the idea and cannot wait to see it get off the ground.

5) How will including this person in your network enhance your ability to exploit an opportunity? I've taken a stab at marketing before when doing BeeSafe, but with his help everything could be that much better.

1) Who they are and what their background is. Student who owns a scooter (potential Scüber employee).

2) Which 'slot' you are filling with each person (i.e., domain expert, market expert, supplier), and how the person fills the spot. Supplier, because she would be supplying the scooter.

3) A description of how you found the person and contacted the person. I asked a random person by all the scooter parking spaces on campus.

4) The nature of the exchange you have with the person -- what favor did they do for you? What is the return expectation? She was nice, and all in for the idea, she expressed that half the time when you pass someone walking while your on the scooter, you're both going to the same class, might as well make some money off of it.

5) How will including this person in your network enhance your ability to exploit an opportunity? She would be a potential employee, getting paid for her service.

Finally: Reflect.
Targeted networking was refreshing to talk to relevant people for my company, as opposed to target customers, who have seemingly similar perspectives. This assignment made the idea of creating a business more attainable when you connect with people who've already been there.

  1. Caroline,
It's always good to have someone knowledgeable in app development in your network, especially when your business requires an app (obviously). I'm sure they would love to help you out if you ever wanted to go through with this business. It also seems like you have your first employee, as well! Expanding our networks is always beneficial.

  2. Hi Caroline,
These seem like very good contacts to have in developing your business idea. I'm interested to see how this idea grows throughout the rest of this course. This business model is a very enticing way to connect with customers who are afraid to commit to a subscription or large purchase because they can order one ride with your service, see how it goes, then judge their experience from there. This will follow with one-time trials, but also repeat customers who fall in love with your service.
